Patch Guide

What Is a Patch?

A patch is a separate decorative piece containing a logo, name, emblem, or design that is attached to a finished product. Patches add texture and character while allowing artwork to be displayed in a defined shape.

They are especially popular on caps, jackets, uniforms, workwear, bags, and team apparel.

Why Choose a Patch?

A custom patch may be a good choice when you want:

  • A bold, dimensional appearance

  • A classic uniform or workwear look

  • A defined border around the design

  • More detail than direct embroidery may allow

  • A design that can be applied to multiple product styles

  • A leather, woven, embroidered, or full-color finish

Embroidered Patches

Embroidered patches are created with thread sewn onto a fabric base. They offer a traditional, textured appearance and work well for bold artwork, lettering, emblems, and simple logos.

Best for:

  • Classic uniform designs

  • Team and school emblems

  • Bold logos

  • Designs where texture is important

Woven Patches

Woven patches use thinner threads woven closely together. This allows them to reproduce finer details and smaller lettering than many traditional embroidered patches.

Best for:

  • Detailed logos

  • Small lettering

  • Clean lines

  • A smooth, refined appearance

Sublimated Patches

Sublimated patches use a full-color printing process. The ink becomes part of the patch material, making this option suitable for gradients, shading, illustrations, and highly detailed artwork.

Best for:

  • Full-color designs

  • Gradients and shading

  • Complex illustrations

  • Artwork with many small details

Faux Leather and Leather-Look Patches

Leather-look patches provide a warm, handcrafted appearance. Designs are commonly engraved, printed, debossed, or otherwise applied to the patch surface.

Best for:

  • Outdoor and western-inspired brands

  • Trucker caps

  • Rustic or premium branding

  • Simple logos and bold lettering

PVC Patches

PVC patches are made from a flexible rubber-like material. They can create bold shapes, raised details, and weather-resistant designs.

Best for:

  • Outdoor gear

  • Workwear

  • Athletic products

  • Bold, modern branding

Product availability may vary.

Patch Shapes

Patches can often be created in standard or custom shapes, including:

  • Circle

  • Oval

  • Square

  • Rectangle

  • Shield

  • Arch

  • Hexagon

  • Custom shape based on the artwork

The best shape depends on the logo, product, available space, and attachment method.

How Are Patches Attached?

Sewn-On Patches

A sewn-on patch is stitched around its edge and attached permanently to the product. This is one of the most durable attachment methods.

Heat-Applied Patches

Heat-applied patches use a heat-activated adhesive. Suitability depends on the patch, product material, and the item’s ability to withstand heat.

Hook-and-Loop Patches

Hook-and-loop backing allows patches to be removed or exchanged. This option is commonly used for tactical gear, uniforms, bags, and products designed with a compatible loop surface.

Not every backing method is appropriate for every product. We’ll recommend an attachment option based on the item and its intended use.

Designing a Successful Patch

For the best result:

  • Keep important text large enough to read.

  • Avoid placing critical details too close to the border.

  • Choose a shape that complements the artwork.

  • Use strong contrast between the design and background.

  • Consider woven or sublimated options for fine details.

  • Remember that leather-look patches work best with simplified artwork.

Patch Care

Care requirements vary by patch material and attachment method. In general:

  • Follow the product’s original care instructions.

  • Wash garments inside out when possible.

  • Use cold or cool water.

  • Avoid high dryer temperatures.

  • Do not iron directly over the patch.

  • Avoid harsh chemicals and bleach.

Is a Patch Right for Your Project?

Patches are ideal for designs that need a strong border, a dimensional appearance, or a distinctive material such as leather-look or PVC. They can also be a great alternative when artwork is too detailed for direct embroidery.
